Vintage red coral necklace with silver filigree beads

This stunning graduated coral necklace, has been crafted from a strand of nineteen red coral beads from North Africa. These beautiful barrel shaped coral beads are alternated with twenty old filigree silver beads to create a fabulous necklace. The silver beads have been inlaid with the semi-precious stones lapis lazuli, red coral and amazonite. This necklace has been strung with a black cotton cord. The red coral branches can reach a length of 10-12 inches and are usually only one colour although they may exhibit several different shades of red. Red coral is formed in up to a depth of 250m off the coast of Morocco, in sea water which needs to be calm, unpolluted and warm, with a high level of salinity.  Red coral has long been prized for it's beauty and rarity and treasured as priceless family heirlooms. This is a vintage piece of jewellery. There is some wear evident on the silver beads and stones, which is consistent with age. Weight: 287grams Length: 76cm
