Moroccan jewellery chest

Vintage chest with Camel bone and Filigree Brass

Vintage  Chest, handcrafted in camel bone with brass

This beautiful vintage chest is decorated with polished camel bone and inlaid with panels of filigree brass work. Handcrafted in Morocco, some of the camel bone has been decorated with Tuareg tribal designs, which have been hand carved into the bone then coloured with Kohl. The latch and handles are composed of camel bone and brass. The cedar wood chest has been lined with camel skin leather, which displays signs of wear indicative of it's age. Traditionally this would have been used as a Dowry chest, passed from mother to daughter. For centuries it has been the custom for women to bring with them on marriage not only money, but also linen, personal clothes and jewellery. These goods were packed into the Dowry chest, traditionally made of wood and decorated with bone or as richly as means would allow, to show it off as a status symbol when the bride arrived at her new home. Across the Middle East, where houses were traditionally sparsely furnished.  The Dowry chest would often be placed in a room where it could serve as an item of practical furniture. This Vintage Chest is a lovely decor piece, which would also make a beautiful gift.   Size: 40cm  x  24cm  x  30cm
