Antique Dowry Chest, inlaid with Camel bone and red Coral

This exquisite Antique Dowry chest was handcrafted in Morocco. It has been handmade from cedarwood and inlaid with intricate designs of camel bone, red Coral and also Moroccan Silver. Traditionally these wooden chests were used as Dowry chests, passed from mother to daughter. Those chests with the more elaborate decoration, displayed the wealth of the family. The Dowry chest was used to store the linen, clothing and jewellery the new bride would take from her home to that of her parents-in-law. These chests were also used as practical pieces of furniture in the home, due to storage constraints. The eight-pointed star predominantly featured on this Dowry chest, is also the basis of many patterns in Moroccan design. Red coral features as centrepieces in both the flower and star designs depicted on this Dowry chest, which have been replicated throughout the design. There are heavy metal and inlaid bone handles on either side and the ornate metal latch has been decorated with camel bone and has been inlaid with red coral. This Dowry chest has a plain wooden back and is designed to be displayed against a wall. It has also been lined with camel leather. This is a beautiful antique piece of furniture and is destined to become a family heirloom. A piece which you can pass down through your family for generations to come.
