The Potts Point Galleries
Located at 67 Macleay Street Potts Point and situated on the eastern fringe of Sydney.
Potts Point is home to an eclectic mix of creative souls, to entrepreneurs and also to a surprising number of singles, who love the proximity to the city hub. Nearby are numerous theatres, galleries and beautiful beaches.
Trendy chrome and glass mixes with terraced houses and gracious apartment buildings. They would not look out of place in New York! Shops, boutiques and restaurants are in abundance and the streets are alive with people. The Potts Point Galleries is a popular stop for tourists and locals alike.
After several recommendations, we approached the Manager Nino and Owner Brett about obtaining a shop within The Potts Point Galleries.
As a result a relationship was born! Due to the ambience of the Potts Point Galleries, from the moment you walk through the door you feel welcome.
‘Shop 21’ is a generous glass cabinet displaying four shelves of our Moroccan treasures. A mix of our wonderful black and white ceramics handcrafted in Fez; tribal jewellery and handbags are displayed. In addition, we also showcase both vintage and modern objet d’art gathered on our journeys throughout Morocco.
Currently we have a window display featuring lovely vintage pieces that have been decorated with camel bone. This includes natural polished bone and also bone that has been dyed with saffron.
Due to the number of camels found in Morocco, the by-products are recycled. Meat is sold in the marketplace, camel leather used for shoes, Ottomans and also clothing. The bone is used for jewellery and also used extensively in home decoration. Jewellery and Dowry chests, mirrors, tables and also chairs may feature hand-cut pieces of bone.
The centrepiece of the collection is a magnificent Acacia wood Dowry Chest. The chest has been ornately decorated and features the eight pointed star. It has also been decorated with camel bone, filigree metal and red coral. In addition, it has been lined with camelskin leather.
A hexagonal glass-topped side table which is inlayed with filigreed metal and camel bone, matches the Dowry chest. In addition, there are two vintage leather topped stools featured, which are also inlayed with decoratively carved camelbone.
A display at the Potts Point Galleries would not be complete without including a Beni Ourain rug. In the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco, Berber tribeswomen still use traditional wooden looms to weave these wonderful woollen rugs. Beni Ourain rugs are famous worldwide for their black geometric designs, woven into the soft natural sheeps wool. These lovely rugs will age beautifully and also become softer with age
The Potts Point Galleries is an Aladdin’s cave of exotic and fascinating goods. Open 7 days per week, 10 – 6pm.
We look forward to seeing you in the near future, at our ‘Shop 21’ within the Potts Point Galleries!
