A fun month of Markets.
When we first had the idea of setting up Caravanserai Trading Company, the plan was that it would be purely an online business. We hadn’t initially considered Markets.
After the fun of being at our Paddington Pop Up shop in August and September, it was decided to trial the Christmas markets on the beautiful Northern Beaches in Sydney. We booked Market stalls at Newport, Mona Vale and Palm Beach in order to promote our business as importers of unique Moroccan goods and to showcase those products to as many people as possible.
The Newport Beach Christmas market was held just a stones throw from the surf beach. It had a very relaxed holiday atmosphere, with people strolling up from the beach dressed in board shorts or sarongs. Music played from two sound stages nearby, which brought along the younger patrons and there was a real festival vibe to the market atmosphere. Our vegan shoulder bags handcrafted from the Agave cactus plant and colourful Moroccan towels and scarves proved popular amongst the patrons. The stunning Moroccan jewellery in coral and silver were selected as Christmas presents. It was a fun day’s trading by the beach.
The following week it was off to the Mona Vale Christmas Market, where we set up our stall on grass in the park. A perfect summer’s day ensured there were a lot of people visiting the market. It was great to see old friends who came to say hello and meet new friends who discovered the exciting array of Moroccan handcrafts.
The Leather Tote Bags proved to be popular. The soft lightweight leather bags are perfect for shopping or a good size to carry your laptop. Even compact enough to roll up and put in your handbag for that extra shopping bag.
Trinket boxes handcrafted in Moroccan silver, decorated with bright enamel were also popular as gifts. So useful to store earrings in or just for use as a decorative piece. In addition, the recycled glass bottles decorated with Moroccan silver, are guaranteed to jazz up any bathroom. They also make cute Christmas gifts.
Next market was in Elizabeth Bay, in a residential facility for senior citizens. We had visited ‘Trebartha’ before and were invited back to showcase our Moroccan giftware items. In a relaxed atmosphere such as Trebartha, there was time to share our stories of Morocco and explain the history of the items.
Lovely scarves in linen, cotton and vegan silk were popular with the residents, as were the stunning wooden jewellery boxes. Handcrafted from the burl of the root of the Thuya tree, with a distinct cedar wood smell, they make a perfect gift for a man or woman. In addition, the leather change purses in the shape of a mouse, made the perfect gift for younger family members. It was a pleasure to meet the wonderful staff and residents and most of all we look forward to our next visit to Trebartha in 2017.
The final Market for 2016 was held at beautiful Palm Beach. Palm Beach is 40 kms from the Sydney CBD and the home of the popular ‘Home and Away’ television series.
A popular choice amongst Palm Beach market goers were the stylish new shoulder bags handwoven in Marrakech. They are available in handwoven fabric in coral, Majorelle blue and navy, with straps crafted in vegan leather. In addition, they have matching Beach bags. These would make a wonderful Christmas gift, treat yourself or someone you love.
Palm Beach Market was a great place to meet up with friends and locals. As a result, we look forward to returning to the Northern Beaches Christmas Markets in 2017.
In conclusion, we hope that you have enjoyed our journey through our month of markets.
